So, I have plenty of time on my hand and this is the one time in my life i can buy plenty of Alcohol and wife is ok with it.

So looking to try some better Whisky/Bourbon.

Suggestions?

Keep in mind

A) I'm not rich. So like 50 to 60 bucks for a bottle of something is prob my tops right now.

2) I live in Alabama so it has to be something I can get here. Can't ship anything. (I guess I could to a store but not something i want to bother with atm.).

?) I think those 2 were it.

I think the last ones I had were like Maker's mark and Bullit. I mostly mix with coke but if it's smooth enough I'll go straight up.
Rodney is a great guy. Oops, nevermind he's a terrible human being.
He likes his sandwiches to be Turkey and Swiss. Triangle cut. Let vern have his crust. Poison the part Rodney eats.

First off, if you plan to explore new bourbons even at the $50-$60 price range don’t mix. It’s a waste of money. Stick to the cheaper stuff for mixing.

Have you figured out if you are a fan of ryes or not? Most people love or hate them so if they are out that excludes a bunch.

Unlike craft beer, I haven’t had much luck finding good whiskeys from smaller distilleries. Small batches from the big players tend to be where all the good stuff is.

http://www.eatdrinkjourney.com/jim-beam.html

For example, these 4. Basil Hayden is an easy drink at only 80 proof. Knob Creek makes some interesting variations as well.

https://www.buffalotracedistillery.com/brands/buffalo-trace

Buffalo trace and eagle rare are good ones to try when looking to try new stuff.

Old Forrester makes some good small batch ones. The bottle in bond 1897 I remember being particularly good.

Old Grand Dad is a cheap buy, good buy and thus probably good for mixing. Same with Jim Beam Black.

Or just text me a picture of the inventory next time you are at a store and I’ll throw out some recommendations:)

You mean my discovery channel experience was incorrect? Color me shocked!

I'm not much of a Whiskey/Bourbon afficianado, so unfortunately I don't have many suggestions. Sorry TIB. The only one I'd recommend is Wyoming Whiskey, but I don't think they distribute to Alabama (definitely don't to Arkansas).

That place reads a lot like this one: https://whistlepigwhiskey.com/ which is good if you like eyes but a tad pricey. I’ll have to see if I can find the Wyoming stuff.

For your "lower end", non mass distributed (Beam, Jack, Makers, etc...):

Elijah Craig
Buffalo Trace - is my go to when I can find it
Four Roses - they have several different levels in the not too expensive categories. I can't remember if I like the small batch or single barrel more.
Stillhouse - it comes in a tin can, but it is aged in coffee or something. I like it, but may not be your style.
Mitchters
Weller - green label (if you can find it)
There are several more that I just can't think of at the moment.

For a little more pricey:
Blanton's - if you can find it, buy it
Eagle Rare - if you can find it
Weller Antique - if you can find it
Mitchters has a small batch that is really good
Angel's Envy - if you like it a bit sweeter. this is aged in a rum barrel
Woodford Reserve
Elijah Craig - small batch barrell proof
Jefferson's Ocean
Basil Hayden's
Willett
Yellowstone
Baker's 7 year

The bourbon I usually keep around the house for old fashioneds or casual drinking is Basil Hayden’s. Super smooth! Def recommend.

Aberfeldy Malt is one of the best Whisky's I've had. I've been to their distillery in Scotland, it's great. Not sure if you'll find that in the US but it's worth trying for sure.

Other ones that come to mind are Glenfiddich, Glen Moray, and my favourite, Glenmorangie.

I can't recommend any others. I'm not an aficionado when it comes to Whisky. I usually drink Bells or some other cheap blend, with lemonade.

Scotch Whiskey is a whole 'nother discussion. I used to drink a lot of scotch, but it's an expensive habit. Unfortunately, Bourbon/US Whiskey is getting expensive now too.

Can’t do it. Don’t like the peatyness and I guess to a degree just generally don’t like their mash bills

I'm the opposite. I greatly prefer Scotch to an American Whiskey.

I almost always have a bottle of Glenlivet in my cabinet. Got a bottle of Macallen (sp?) a while back as a gift, and that wasn't too bad either.
