Well you start out by figuring out what race you want to play and then rolling a die for stats. A d20.

pft. you don't use a d20 for stats, you use a bunch of d6s. filthy casual.

woops you're right. And ya no shit I'm a casual i just started playing (:

i'm just kidding D: i've only played a few times myself, and only with 1 friend. i don't really think we got the real D&D experience when the one player controls 4 characters.

I've never played it and do wonder how it's done.

Well you start out by figuring out what race you want to play and then rolling a die for stats. A d20. Then you pick a class. Your characters back story is really all up to you and limited by your own creativity. Then you put a certain amount of points into skills and get a feat or like a special ability and all that. This are all the types of things you can do in game like "Move Silently* or *Disable Trap* or *Sense Motive*.

You also need a DM someone who runs the game. They're basically the story teller and have control over if you live or die. They keep the story moving. Basically everything is done by die roll. Attack? Roll a die. The numbers determine if you hit and how much damage you do. The DM rolls them for monsters too.

There really is very little limit on what you can do.

So in the end this DM (Dungeon Master or something of the sorts I believe?) can screw me in one move if he wants to?

This, getting another 26 years old around here to play it will be difficult too.
I used to travel the universe, but settled for parks.

The Dungeon Master is essentially Paul in Labyrinth. His job is to make the game difficult on you, but not so difficult that the game is unwinnable.

Like I said, I'm perfectly willing to DM a DnD session. Unless we decided to do this live, it'd probably take a pretty decent amount of time to get things done (real life battles can take upwards of two hours), but I've got a few ideas in mind for how we could streamline combat and make it so that we aren't spending weeks at a time waiting for people to take their actions. If there's enough interest (I'm thinking like... four to six people who'd be willing to commit?) then I could go ahead and start building the world.

@Leos, you should try uprooting the statue and carrying it around as a shield.

Best player on the losing team two Labs running.

Sounds more like Kristoff in Labyrinth tbh

Necroposting just to splurge about some of my own games.

So I actually started getting into DnD in 2016 and have met an awesome group via roll20. I've been playing a Tiefling Sorcerer with this group ever since I started, just having passed the 4-year mark in May.

I also have a Half-Elf fighter that's a werewolf I had art commisioned for, and I have a couple wizards, a cleric, and a barbarian.

I have a few other campaigns that we all play in and take turns DM-ing and I've been running a game or two for the past two years. I'm currently running a Curse of Strahd game but having to put it on hiatus due to some issues that I'm currently dealing with.

Anyways! DnD is fun and idk why I wasn't playing it earlier.

I've played in person a few times. Mostly play online which can also be very fun.

A new Unearthed Arcana got released today, which is basically free playtest material that WOTC publishes for players and DMs to try out in their own games. It's usually new class options or new rules and mechanics they want to try out and get feedback on to put in new source material.

This week, it's a new Bard and Warlock subclass! https://media.wizards.com/2020/dnd/downloads/UA2020_Subclasses04.pdf
Seeing the tarroka deck and Strahd mentioned in the UA makes me think they're planning to release some sweet sweet Ravenloft content which I am 110% down for as I love the gothic horror vibe.
