Background:
For Watts, a life in the military meant money, parties, booze and women. Having fumbled most of his training exercises, Watts got where he needed to get by lying and backstabbing his colleagues. Although a very skilled pilot and fighter, Watts is terrible at taking orders, disobeying commands at every turn and constantly attending disciplinary tribunals for his recklessness. On top of this he is generally sarcastic, lazy and arrogant.

His position as captain is also largely diplomatic, as his uncle owns one of the leading mining corporations in the solar system. Without being able to necessarily dismiss or demote him, the Ganymede forces decided to relegate him to asteroid running missions from Europa, a base built for research and resource gathering as opposed to combat and deep space exploration.

Despite knowing all of the details and politics, Watts has never cared much because as boring as Europa was, it made it easier to go off the clock and nobody seemed to care. However having recently been placed in charge of the operation to investigate Dalia, Watts is beginning to expect that Mission Control simply want him out of the picture.

The screams he heard on the transmission have him nervous, and though he was given free reign to pick a crew, he opted to select a largely civilian unit; partly because most seasoned soldiers would instantly turn it down and they owed him no favours anyway. Secondly because when the crew were seen to be completely incompetent, maybe the whole thing would be called off and he could go back to bed.
