Is there any indication as to why you wouldn't have been able to detect the radiation trap, Cronkite?

We shall continue south. Re-arming the trap would be a mistake, unless we think it can inflict damage on the monsters.

I am quite confused. It's clearly a trap since it can be re-armed. Perhaps Cronkite can only sense certain traps?
