Things were looking up when the X4 docked with our ship. Or so I thought. This so-called crew of professionals didn't look much more capable than our civilian crew, truth be told.

But bodies were bodies, and we'd need all the help we could get to rescue those scared, lost workers aboard the Dalia. To rescue my Starla. All things considered, these new crew members were a fresh injection of hope, hope that we already needed.

From the confused and concerned looks I was getting from them as I thought all these things, I again was brought back to the idea that they were somehow hearing everything I was thinking. Was I truly vocalizing all of this? I took a quick gulp outta my flask. They were only looks, Francis, nothing more. No evidence of anything else. I had bigger things to worry about. Like my emergency flask being nearly dry already.

Dain @ 25/4/2015 14:57
Introductions again, eh? Name's Dain, originally from Mars. Been jumping from ship to ship for as long as I can remember, picking up any jobs I can find. On a completely unrelated note, anyone here got any smokes?

I believe I have just the stuff.

*offers a cigarette*

Now, about those drinks?

The bartender distinctly reminded me of ol' Jed down at Zeus' Eagle. A man that you could entrust all your secrets to, yet also a man with that glint in his eye. That glint that says, "You cross me, you're gonna be sorry you was ever born!" Fortunately I never fell on that side of Jed. I prayed that it'd be the same case with Dain. It could be the start of a beautiful friendship, for all I knew.

*takes gulp of moonshine*

Ah, that's the stuff. I'll take this over Ganymede City's sorry excuses for spirits any day.

I will say this much. Anyone wants to stop me from smoking, is gonna have to personally force me to stop.

*takes a drag, before surreptitiously offering one to Keisha*

I took another swig of the Ion moonshine and mulled over the diatribe that I had just heard spill out of Cassie's mouth. I wondered what events in her life led her to carrying herself this way, speaking this way. It was unbecoming.

The question I kept coming back to was why she was on a Dalia rescue mission when her goal was to get revenge on some television producers. My mind was truly vexed. Yet another case for me to crack, it seemed. Cases upon cases, I was already struggling to keep them all straight.

The baby. I had almost forgotten about that goddamned baby. How he got aboard Watts' ship was one of the largest outstanding questions in this case. Not just the how, but the why.

Every time it'd look up at me with its big, doe-like eyes, I would be reminded of my failures as a husband. Starla wanted a child, through and through, and she made no attempt at hiding that fact. But I was too much of a coward to ever give it a second thought. Now what I wouldn't give to be back home with her raising one. Hell, a dozen for all I cared, so long as I with her. But that dream was yet so far away. The case had a long way to go before I could even start to dream.

*shoots a quick glance at Aldo and takes another gulp of moonshine*

Right. Smoking room. Which way was that?

From the moment Arissa set foot on the flight deck, there was something about her I couldn't quite place. Did she remind me of a younger Starla? Perhaps that was part of the answer, but not all. It's never quite that easy.

We have something in common, it seems. I too was supposed to be on board that shuttle but got...ill, yes, that's it. But I was to be a mere proud spouse, aboard as a civilian whilst my wife helped navigate the ship.

She was indeed. Her whereabouts are the mystery of the hour, no mistaking it.

*takes drag, before remembering that we're outside the smoking room*
*shrugs and continues*

That's why I'm here, one could say. Case ain't gonna solve itself.

Lionel Cronkite had a mug mean enough to knock paint off a star cruiser, and a tenacity I admired. But that didn't mean he wasn't following all the wrong leads. Kayla was the least of our concerns. I was only scratching the surface of this case, but I was steadfastly confident in that much at least.

Ex...external what? There it was again. Was I going mad? Or had I simply drank too much of that good Ion hooch?

Lionel, lay it on me. I would be glad to peruse your notes.

Just when hope seemed to be at an all-time high, in came Edom to take everyone down a peg. Hell, maybe it was warranted. But I'd be surprised if he'd seen a real fight in all his life. Not just a fight; but a real, genuine, honest to God fight. Had he patrolled the seedy streets of Ganymede City? Had he solved the unsolvable case of the laseraxe murderer, right down to the chase for the ages through downtown Gan City? I would bet not.

In any case, his assumption was about to be put to the test. We had almost arrived. And I had a feeling the strong and the weak on this mission would be less predictable than anyone could imagine. As my father always used to say, strength can be found in the strangest of places.
