Background:
Matthieu is a scientist who works in the field of alloys and asteroid stability research. He has spent most of his life living under the shadow of his father, Raymond, who wanted him to continue the family asteroid mining trade. Matthieu chose instead to pursue a life of study and research, publishing papers documenting the danger that detonation methods cause to nearby planetary habitation. This caused something of a rift between him and his father, who lamented his son's "eco-hippy crap". Despite their misgivings, the two shared an obsession with their own work that eventually caused Matthieu to separate with his wife.

His father devoted his later years to writing journals and researching flaws in pioneering mining research. When he presented documented evidence that shut down Matthieu's environmental research, the two had a falling out and lost contact. However when Matthieu received a message that his father had been found dead on Earth, he sought out Raymond's research journals. The most recent entries were discrediting the corporation Kayla Interplanetary and their recent funding of the Dalia vessel.

Coupling this with the mysterious and tragic death of his father, Matthieu vowed to get to the bottom of it and find out what his father had unwittingly become involved in. Believing it to be related to the disappearance of all crew aboard the Dalia, Matthieu ensured he joined the expedition, leaving his two children (Elizabeth and Jacob) behind with their mother.
