Background:
Born on Mars, Stubbs was a rebellious kid who was always causing trouble and getting into scrapes. In spite of this he had a good heart, but just found the bleak Martian life-style depressing and boring. He'd often gaze up at the stars in the hopes he could fly out there some day.

When a military official from Ganymede came to visit, Stubbs signed up in a heart-beat. He went to the military academy on Ceres but was always getting into trouble because of his refusal to listen to authority. Despite this he did become a trained pilot, albeit almost crashing into an asteroid on his first mission when he flew too fast.

As a disciplinary measure he was stationed on the peaceful but boring Europa Base, which meant he never got to fly out. Feeling antsy, he was looking for the first available mission he could find. One such mission came to light, and it was being run by Captain Watts. Stubbs knew that Watts was a guy who hated authority as much as he did, so he jumped at the chance to come aboard.
