The base set up was:

For townies, most folks were one of two types: Either similar to regular roles (cops, tracker, watcher, etc.) or multirole jack of all trades. For the regular roles, even they had at least a couple different powers (for example, the watcher (Lamps) could also commute away. Townies had a lot of protective roles (BP, redirects, etc.) partially because mafia had a lot of power roles and partially because there was the potentiality that it could be overcome by lover connections. As a wildcard, I also made Rick Astley’s rickrolling unstoppable to help balance things a bit. But even if someone had a regular role, I did also disperse some similar roles around town (for example: multiple commuter actions). I also set up two different potential “mason” groups, with the masons needing to find each other (in each case, it was side projects two or three bands were involved in). I figured that the potential bandmates wouldn’t out it immediately or, even if they got together, there might be some residual suspicion since they weren’t specifically called “masons”. I did laugh a bit at Primate dropping electric/electronic references all day D1, right up to posting the video for “Disappointed”. It confused the mafia for a bit, who thought he had an electricity power. The Glove (Timmah and Ahoda’s sideproject band) would have gained a killing attack had they gotten together from the song “Perfect Murder”- in fact, technically I should have still given it to Ahoda since they got together the night Timmah died, but in hindsight that was a mistake.

In balancing the game, I ended up stripping some of the powers I originally gave to a couple of the mason bands (Ahoda’s Siouxsie and Primate’s Smiths primarily). Instead, I gave them a search song (but made a mistake and forgot to give Primate his until N2/3). I also moved a few folks powers to only being useable on their lover (partially to balance the game and partially to give townies an incentive to risk being lovers for a short time. In balancing, I also made the mistake originally of not giving Christian all his Blondie songs- I’d accidently over-deleted in balancing and realized I’d given him powers to use on his lover but no way to get a lover in the first place outside of help from someone else. OTOH, Ben’s Erasure I intentionally left without a love song because he could mod-confirm himself to his lover and I thought it would be OP to have him slip lover to lover mod-confirming himself. Ended up he never got the chance to try.

Outside of one song (New Order’s “Bizarre Love Triangle”) I was only allowing folks to have one lover at a time. This lead to one of the “mysteries” from the game- how DS’s power worked itself out. For all actions, I kept the following Order of Operations: Town->Mafia->SK->Other. DS had a power where he could make what happened to a first target also happen to a second. He used it on himself as the first target a lot, which lead to some interesting situations: DS being RBed when Maddie was his second. His action worked before the RB on OoO, so he ended up just redirecting his RB to Maddie rather than both him and Maddie being RBed. This is why he clarified with me that “nothing happened”. Same thing when he had himself as #1 and Herm as #2: TT made Buffy and DS lovers, but it broke the rules for them to have a threesome outside of “Bizarre Love Triangle”, so instead DS redirected the lovers thing to Herm. I ran it similar to how I had it if multiple love songs were run on the same person at night- in this case, the Buffy/Herm relationship won out.

I wasn’t sure how the lovers thing would play out- it was humorous to watch everyone targeting Henry for lovers N1 only to have him killed and ruin all that. I had just calculated which song was gonna win in terms of lovers when Zersch sent me his Henry kill order.

I also intentionally didn’t want to reveal full powers when folks died because I wanted to watch people scum hunt and piece out people’s claims. Once bands started being claimed, I gave mafia four safe claim bands (A-Ha, Tears for Fears, The Cars, and Thompson Twins) and let them figure out their “powers”. Funny enough, Josh and Herm got stressed and didn’t go for the safe claim they set up, which Maddie and Ape picked up on.

A few mysteries to address:

Herm used his rolesteal on Timmah N1, stole his mimic power (which “stole Timmah’s voice” in flavor). They then decided to mimic Henry’s unwatchable kill (which is why there were two stabbings). Mafia almost picked Jamie as the target, which would have led to Curtis being killed N1, despite the bussing (Jamie died because mafia targeted Curtis, so Curtis also would have died had they targeted Jamie). Instead, they switched to farlig, who was redirecting all attacks on him to Darkus. So Herm ended up going out and killing Darkus.

Lamps was the primary town watcher. Nobody knew that from his flip because he’d already determined who the scum were and, as he told me essentially as he decided to commute: “Why risk it when scum are outing themselves.” Herm mimicked zersch and, not knowing that zersch had an unstoppable kill, Lamps got killed right after he commuted. So his action was successful; he just got killed afterwards. Same with spin’s census action- it worked before he got killed, so that was his last successful action.

Picking out a song for each day and night phase was fun, given I wanted every day phase to have a song lyric that matched the day and every night need a “night” song. I intentionally chose songs from artists who were *not* in the game; I didn’t post The Cars until Canuck had flipped and shown he wasn’t who he had claimed to be.

Surprises:

No matter how much you plan things out and try to balance them, the great thing about modding is the surprises. Those little unscripted moments that are perfect yet totally unplanned just make my day. Here are a few from this game:

- The Henry/Curtis lynch going down to the wire, with the last minute flip to Curtis. Watching Ahoda and company cheering the moment Curtis finally got D1ed was kind of funny. Suddenly I got a PM from Brian and when I opened it, Brian was asking if he could use his lynch save power on Curtis. I’d totally forgotten Brian had that power and it was the perfect use of it that surprised me and made me almost fall out of my chair laughing. A short time later Curtis wrote me telling me this had gone from his worst game to greatest game in a moment.
- We know that Curtis gets targeted a lot early on and his survival made it more so. The Jamie/Curtis bus made tracking all that complicated for me, to say the least.
- Herm stealing Timmah’s mimic, then mimicking Henry’s unwatchable kill, only to get redirect to by farlig to kill Darkus. You just can’t plan that sort of mix-up.
- The reactions to the “Prince throws a party and now it’s Day 3” post. Made it worth having that power in the game.
- Three mafia people claiming their actual bands instead of the safe claim bands (Helios, Herm, and Josh) but still getting away with it for a time.
- Herm stressing out that he thought he fucked it up for mafia, so he exploded in a non-Herm post, which lead to the Herm lovefest (that saved him for a couple days).
- The number of last minute nailbiters this game seem more than usual, even with FE’s penchant for last minute lynches.

A few of my favorite moments from throughout the game:

Pregame
- Spin knowing 90s Depeche Mode but not really 80s, so he listened to them only to get weird looks from his wife
- Me messing up Christian's Blondie actions list not once but twice, because it was one of the last ones I edited while balancing

Day 1
- Nofo popping in to say Mister Mister's "Broken Wings" was one of his favorites
- Three mafia members were inactive (Canuck came on later, Henry came on almost literally after the day closed, Helios was no show).
- The Curtis/Henry tie lynch going into the final minutes. I started prepping writeups for both, then was ready to post the Curtis one, when brian Pmed me right at deadline. It was a surprise to everyone, including myself, because I had forgotten brian had the ability.
- Primate dropping so many Electronic hints and finally the video
- Violin sex

Night 1
- Tier bussing Curtis and Jamie made things complicated with all the curtis targets going to jamie instead
- Herm stealing Timmah's action, then using it to mimic Henry's kill, only to attack farlig who was redirecting kills to Darkus

Day 2
- Primate "Vlady loves him some flavor. He tweaks it and nudges it and rubs it all over his body."
- Wikey telling me he's sorry he failed my favorite role from this game.
- DS having a good read on Helios, but his reactions turned some off from this.

Night 2
- The reactions to the Prince party made it worth havign this ability in

You are the third party mimic. At night, you may target a single person. You will be told a parody song of one of their songs, along with the action this allows. You can then use this parody song on subsequent nights or you may learn another person’s song to add to your repertoire.

If you are attacked at night, your current action will be automatically cancelled, but you will be saved by you playing “Like a Surgeon”. This happens automatically.

You win if you survive to the end of the game.

All in all, I had a great time running the game and I hope you all had a good time playing it.
