He was used to serving people. He had long ago accepted it as his calling in life and he did it well.
On this particular night he finished up his duties and retired to his room to read a bit before bedtime. He put on his pristinely laundered pajamas, settled into bed with his pillow propped up, and opened his book. The text was blurry. Drat! He realized he had left his reading glasses in the library where he had been reading the Daily Bugle earlier that morning.
He put on his robe and slippers and left his room. The hallway leading to the library was darkened. Good thing he knew these halls like the back of his hand. He reached the library and opened the door. There was a faint light from the green lamp which just barely lit up the corner table. He spied his glasses and walked over. His slipper caught on the carpet and he stumbled forward just as he was reaching for the glasses. That was a close call, he thought, as he righted himself. He had dropped the glasses, though. He saw they had fallen just under the table. He would have to get down on the carpet to reach them. Once he had them in his hands, he reached for the table edge to pull himself back up. Oh, his body ached - it had seen better days. He slowly raised himself toward a standing position but just before he was on his feet he felt a sharp pain on the back of his head. He fell back down, hitting his forehead hard on the table leg before he fell to the ground...
and lost consciousness...
Forever.
