Below is a brief summary of everything so far that has occurred in Labyrinth. The game has a continuity, but knowledge of the previous plot is never necessary to enjoy the individual games themselves. Nonetheless it's always nice for players to have some idea of the background and so presented here is a breakdown of the game chronology and a summary of the plot along with associated links.

This will be updated over time, as new prologues are added.

The Chronology

Pandora's Box is sealed away in Paradiso, another realm and the final resting place of the just. It is considered far too dangerous to leave within the reaches of humanity. Where it came from is unknown. The box possesses the power to call out to people and lure them towards it.

*

King Minos is gathering a band of heroes together in his palace at Knossos, Crete. Amongst them is the known hero Theseus. He is an arrogant young man who derives power from his ancient and mystical sword, said to be able to cut through anything in existence. He used it to defeat the minotaur in the Labyrinth at Knossos built by Daedalus previously.

Daedalus greets Theseus and they go to the meeting where other heroes are waiting. Minos informs them that their mission is to enter and investigate the Labyrinth, a source of some strange happenings over the past few days. His own army, including the highly trained stealth warriors known as the Dusk Vanguard have all failed to return from it.

He is paying the heroes handsomely to complete this task. The Labyrinth is glowing purple and emitting a strange light into the clouds. Nonetheless, most of the heroes feel that this is a task which is beneath them.

*

Labyrinth 3: Pandora's Calling (Ancient Greek Labyrinth):
The events of Labyrinth 3, for the Ancient Greek portion of the Labyrinth, take place. Minos' Heroes enter the Labyrinth only to find Theseus teleported away mysteriously. They are trapped, and end up jumping through time to the future.

At this point, the timeline takes a divergence. The events that transpire in this portion of the Labyrinth occur in their own "time bubble" which is separate from the main timeline. On defeating Willis and opening Pandora, the "time bubble" collapses.

*

Theseus defeats Willis alone and sends him away:
This is mentioned by Minos in The Beggar.

In actuality, Willis is defeated by the heroes in the future portion of the Labyrinth during the events of Labyrinth 3. However Theseus' catches him off-guard as he's escaping and proceeds to take credit for the defeat.

*

Labyrinth 3, Epilogue 1:
Peter Mallick ventures into the mountains near the Labyrinth, to relay a message from his deceased friend Stonehard Lee. Therein he meets the tribe of Stonehard Lee, who have been cursed with a softening spell which is killing them slowly. On arrival he's challenged to a duel by Lee's brother, Stonehard Troctolite. He wins, using his abilities to dodge, and he relays the message that Stonehard Lee was a hero, and saved the entire tribe.

*

Minos dies via means unknown. Daedalus dies as well. Both of them are ascended to the rank of "ancient ones". These are immortal entities who defend the other realms of Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso.

*

Theseus dies. The cause of death is unknown. Upon his dying, he is buried with his sword which is taken away by the ancient ones and guarded carefully inside Inferno. It is one of a few ancient and powerful artifacts that needs to be removed from humanity for their own protection.

*

Willis, immortal and still seeking revenge, goes looking for the sword after Theseus' death. He finally discovers its location is in Inferno and locates the entrance to the caverns around it. They are inhabited by an order of monks who study the chambers carefully. The entrance contains a large image of an eye for reasons unknown.

*

The Beggar (Labyrinth 3 Other Prologue):
Willis arrives at the Acheron. This is the river of souls that leads into Inferno. It is guarded by Charon, an ancient one who ferries the dead beyond. Charon is currently apprenticing Dante who is not an ancient one but who has been given the gift of immortality from his journey with Virgil through the realms.

Willis challenges Charon to a sword-fight and defeats him using his magic. Charon topples into the Acheron. Reluctantly, Dante takes Willis along to see Minos. Minos is untroubled by his old adversary and fights Willis. He is successful and Minos happily claims Willis' soul into Inferno. He is finally dead.

*

Dante takes over as ferryman once Charon emerges. The sheer concentration of souls flowing along the Acheron have the power to corrupt even the ancient ones. The result is that he has become Feral and insane. He is chained to the gates above the entrance to the Acheron shores as a means of better protection from outsiders. (Dante's Parchment, Labyrinth 2)

*

Labyrinth:
An angry and vengeful man known as MOS constructs an elaborate underground Labyrinth. As a scholar of history, he borrows many elements from the old stories and tales which are now legendary. He creates such things as a mechanical minotaur, a replica sword of Theseus and even goes as far to adopt the name "Willis" from the tales of the ancient Labyrinth.

He locates 32 victims and imprisons them inside his puzzle which is one enormous mind-game. Some of the prisoners are very unstable however. Most noteworthy is Curtis, aka The Butcher. He begins by offering a great deal of assistance to the group and directing them meticulously around the maze but in secret longs to kill them all. The Butcher's only motivations are blood and death.

He finally succeeds in his agenda and slaughters the entire batch of prisoners before locating the chambers where MOS kept his research. He catches up to his captor, murders him and finally escapes to the surface. He decides that having experienced what he just did, the only course of action he wants to take is in making a better and more fatal Labyrinth of his own.

*

Curtis uses the notes from the old Labyrinth and conducts some research. His new Labyrinth needs to be bigger and deadlier than the one he was held prisoner in. He ends up reading about the realm of Inferno, colloquially known as Hell by humanity. He uses money acquired from selling materials scattered around in the underground Labyrinth he escaped from to fund his research. Also aided by the mechanical minotaur he has repaired, he sets about locating the monastery around Inferno.

*

Labyrinth 2 - Prologue B (link pending):
A team of miners hired by Curtis finally locates the entrance to the monastery with the distinctive eye pattern. An over-eager miner touches the entrance and immediately begins to convulse on the floor as if possessed by a strange force. Curtis thanks his team by blowing them all up, so he can begin his operation properly.

*

Using his minotaur and the research obtained from the underground Labyrinth, Curtis constructs a bigger and deadlier Labyrinth that extends throughout the caverns in the monastery. For the finishing touch, he wants to place the key to the exit he will seal beyond the gates of Inferno themselves. He is somehow able to bypass Dante and Minos and reach the entryway of Inferno.

*

Rebirth (Labyrinth 3 Other Prologue):
The souls in that region of Inferno battle for control over the unshielded mind of the Butcher. The most dominant power is the soul of Willis, still lurking just beyond the region he was killed. He has spent the last few centuries maintaining a fleeting control over his persona and waiting for the right moment to strike. He takes it and succeeds.

Adjusting quickly to being inside a new body, and facing a great deal of resistance from the Butcher, Willis is able to escape just as Minos emerges. He flees to the surface in the butcher's body and establishes himself. Control will get easier over time.

He travels to the old Labyrinth in Knossos so he can get a feel for the era and some semblance of control by familiarising himself with a known location. The site is being uncovered by a team of archaeologists but now regaining more use of his magic, Willis teleports into his old lair and works out a plan.

*

Willis begins an operation called "Project Harrow". The idea of Project Harrow is to create a warrior who is capable of achieving what he could not, the recovery of Theseus' Sword from Inferno. To do this he plans on having a host and bombarding them with the souls of skilled people. They will absorb the souls and obtain all of the individual powers. It fails on every count, because the body is unable to cope with all the different streams of consciousness and becomes feral and insane.

*

Willis decides upon a completely different approach. He needs to work backwards and have a spirit embody several different shells, hopefully gaining their abilities that way. He begins his search for the appropriate people.

Labyrinth 2.5 Flashbacks:

Phase 1: Highway to Hell
A young man named Kristoff pushes his daughter Melissa on a swing he constructed for her.

Phase 7: Assault in the Shadows
Kristoff is walking through the woods near his village when he stumbles and falls into an open shaft. He begins to explore and discovers one of Willis' studies. Once inside he lifts up a dagger that is emblazoned with the initials "DV". This in turn possesses him with some kind of dark force.

Phase 4: Retribution
Whilst attending a church service with his family, Kristoff talks to Father Roth (his priest) about the strange effects he's been feeling from his exposure to the possession.

Phase 2: Access Denied
Kristoff's possesion takes over and he attacks his wife and daughter whilst unable to control himself. It seems to turn him into a beast with extraordinary strength and no ability to reason. He is taken in to a nearby military base for scientific study. The military hopes to harness his "sickness" somehow. The possession takes over once more and he kills outside the base before he is subdued.

*

Labyrinth 2 - Prologue A (Link pending):
Willis visits a small village to seek out the prime candidate for Project Harrow. A man named Dr. Patterson, who is an occultist fascinated by the nature of Inferno and death. Willis offer him a chance to join a supposed "expedition" to Hell's Gate, but in reality Willis drugs him and takes him away to the Labyrinth, ready to begin the experiment.

*

Labyrinth 2.5 Flashbacks:

Phase 3: A Path Divided
The military calls on Father Roth to come and investigate the discovery. Despite the scientists' insistence that nothing supernatural could possibly be occurring, the authorities want to cover every eventuality. Roth asks to be alone whilst he performs an attempted exorcism, an activity the church frown upon but which he studies for his own curiosity.

During this time, Roth sabotages the restraints that hold Kristoff in place. He's worried about the effects of Kristoff being put down, and that it might cause the possessor to rapidly change hosts leading to something he deems a "chain possession". He is also worried for his friend.

Phase 6: Escape Run
Kristoff escapes from the base and evades the military fire. He takes up residence in a small cave in the forest nearby his home village.

Phase 9: Night Raid
Kristoff goes to Roth's church. The priest is hesitant to let him in but Kristoff implores him that he will leave once he finally says goodbye to Melissa. He is worried that Melissa will forever look upon him as a monster because of what he did whilst in his trance, and he wants to make peace with her before he leaves.

Roth is reluctant but agrees to attempt another Exorcism. He is doubtful as to whether or not it worked successfully.

Phase 10: The Darkest Day
Kristoff attempts to leave the village once he discovers the police presence around his house. He is tormented by the fear of his daughter loathing him forever though, and creates a diversion by starting a fire in the forest. This reduces the presence and he can sneak into his home.

As he is ascending the staircase to see his daughter, he feels the possession take control. He learns that he can delay it by repeating phrases in his mind, but he knows that it's far too powerful to be kept down. Fearful that he'll kill his daughter whilst possessed in a very unpleasant way, he shoots her silently in her sleep so that it will be instant and she won't be afraid.

Phase 12: Sanctuary
Kristoff takes his own life by driving his car down a hill, unable to face the guilt of what he has unwittingly wrought.

Phase 8: Below Ground
Roth is visited by his superior. He is ex-communicated for his involvement in the recent tragedies and for his continual desire to study the occult behind the church's back. He is to be replaced by Father Jonas in the morning.

Phase 11: Remember the Fallen
Roth is preparing his things to leave the church when he is visited by Willis. Willis asks him to assist in his "expedition" but Roth refuses. As he is leaving, Willis uses his magic to seal the doors of the church and blasts Roth with a powerful does of lightning energy. This transfers a little of Willis' magic to Roth.

He informs Roth that he will need to concentrate hard so as not to unleash the lightning which he can now command. If he uses it in the presence of entites not susceptible to it, it will harm him in turn. Otherwise, it will allow Roth to successfully exorcise, something he has never been able to do before.

Roth is furious and attempts to use his lightning on Willis. Willis stuns him with a toxic dart and takes him away to his Labyrinth. He wants Roth to act as a safeguard in case Dr. Patterson becomes too dangerous and out of control.

*

Labyrinth 2: Hell's Gate
Willis' experiment begins. He has 38 people and gathers them in an ante-room above the butcher's labyrinth. Pretending to be the butcher, he sets them the same task he had in mind (to find the key beyond the black gates and escape). Whilst the groups are completing his first task in the ante-room however, Willis kills Dr. Patterson.

Trapping Patterson's soul using an ancient technique, he is able to deflect the natural flow to Inferno. He informs Patterson that he will need to kill the other 37 inhabitants of the maze, and in doing so will secure his own escape. The alternative is an eternity of suffering in Inferno. Patterson reluctantly agrees and is returned to the groups.

The groups begin their journey through the Labyrinth, encountering a variety of problems and tragedies along the way. Ome such problem is Cerberus, the canine guardian of Inferno. An ancient one, Cerberus is meant to drain the humanity from the souls before they travel beyond the black gates and act as a means to kill a live person travelling down there. But Willis has directed his path from the lower regions into the Labyrinth itself, so he is now hunting where the prisoners roam.

Patterson is killed but able to possess the bodies of any other prisoner that has deceased. He uses this to formulate an attack plan with the mime Wikey, who was turned insane by the souls around inferno that Willis unleashed. They finally reconvene with Patterson in the body of John, a scientist who turned into a monstrous giant because of an experiment gone wrong. The two of them succeed in killing the rest of the prisoners before Patterson kills Wikey.

*

Labyrinth 2: Hell's Gate - Epilogues
Willis then informs Patterson he has one final task to carry out before he can go free. Patterson reluctantly accepts and goes beyond the gates of Inferno to locate the sword. Utilising all of the skills he obtained from possessing the bodies, Patterson is able to evade the guards and retrieves the sword for Willis. Upon returning he attempts to turn the tables and strike Willis down with it but he fails.

Willis escapes the caverns with the Sword and blows up the Chamber of Souls, the mouth of the Acheron. This in turn detonates the Acheron which rises to the surface of Earth. It brings with it a tremendous army of shades, the undead who were once trapped in Inferno but can now walk freely on the Earth.

Minos apprehends Willis in a last ditch attempt to bring him down but Willis is unafraid. He cuts through Minos with the sword. It is unable to kill him, as ancient ones are immortal, but the sword weakens Minos enough that Willis can freeze him with his magic.

*

Dawn of Darkness (Labyrinth 3 Other Prologue):
In Roth's old village which is near where the Acheron surfaced, Father Jonas encounters a mysterious woman named Cassandra. She is actually an ancient one, a seer who can predict events. She informs him that he needs to evacuate the village quickly. Spurred on by her warning as she leaves, Father Jonas rushes to assist the villagers as the eruption of the Acheron descends on the village along with the attacking shades. He gathers as many as he can to flee to the military base.

*

Labyrinth 2: Hell's Gate - Epilogues
Roth's despondent spirit is greeted by the messenger Virgil, an ancient one. He informs Roth that he still has a chance at assisting Earth even though he was killed in the Labyrinth. He will first need to take on the trials of Purgatorio which will test if he is capable.

*

Labyrinth 2.5 Flashbacks:

Phase 14: The Final Showdown
Roth insists that he cannot take the trials of Purgatorio alone and that he must also attone for what happened to Kristoff. Virgil reluctantly agrees and informs Roth he can use the lightning powers given to him in order to travel quickly to a different location. He must be wary not to use too much of it at once though, or it will destroy his essence (even though he is already dead).

*

Labyrinth 2.5 (Link Pending):
Roth teleports to what he believes to be Kristoff's location, but is in fact inside the mountain of Purgatorio. He is unaware that this is part of the trial, but it begins here. He encounters Kristoff in a basement of a motel, attempting to take his own life as he paints in blood on the wall (his control mechanism for the possession).

Roth tells Kristoff that he needs to come with him in order to save the world. They both leave the basement when something erupts in the distance. They discover a dark cloud made up of shades on the horizon, paralleling the events on Earth. Roth takes a group of recently deceased people and goes on a journey to try and defend them from the incoming shades, although he fears the shades have already infiltrated the group.

He eventually comes to the realisation that this is all part of the trials of purgatorio and the locations are merely reflections of Roth's own memories. Amongst the souls he is travelling along with are some of the deceased from both MOS' Labyrinth and Willis'. They finally reconvene at the peak of Purgatorio which takes on the appearance of Melissa's Swing. Kristoff is reunited with the spirit of his daughter but it's revealed to be no more than an illusion as it turns to dust.

Roth mounts a final showdown against the shades, which are actually shadows of dark memories that the travelers carry, as well as individuals who have succumbed to the same darkness. Roth and a few others are able to escape, ascending the staircase to Paradiso. On the ascent they are attacked by the spirit of Henry from MOS' Labyrinth who sends Kristoff toppling down into oblivion.

They finally defeat their adversary and reach the halls of Paradiso where Virgil dismisses the souls of Roth's friends instantly and informs him they have to take on their own journeys now.

*

Labyrinth 2.5 Epilogues (Link Pending):
Virgil tells Roth that Willis is going to mount an attack on the world and that it won't merely stop with what he already has. He will come seeking Pandora's box which has been secreted away in Paradiso. He may eventually gain the power to open it, but the only true key to the box is a staff called the Caduceus. Virgil presents Roth with the staff and tells him to flee to a safe location but Roth makes a request beforehand. Virgil doesn't ask for what it is, and merely tells Roth he knows and that he'll see what he can do.

Willis and his shade army finally breach the halls of Paradiso and take Pandora's Box. He freezes Virgil in the same way that he froze Minos.

Roth returns to the caverns around Inferno to bury his deceased friends and decides to hide out in Sanctuary, a special room that is protected from evil. As he is approaching, he encounters Dante who informs Roth that he has a message to deliver. Dante told him that Virgil brought somebody down. Roth enters Sanctuary to find Kristoff sitting there. For his part in preventing Pandora from being opened, Roth's request was granted. Kristoff was revived from the dead to assist him.

*

At some point, Willis freezes Daedalus in much the same way he did with Minos and Virgil.

*

Dawn of Darkness (Labyrinth 3 Other Prologue):
In the military base, Father Jonas learns despondently that the military are preparing a nuclear strike to attack Willis and his fortress which he is building on the site of the Labyrinth at Knossos.

Willis encounters Cassandra, who looks on as the world is attacked by the nuclear blasts. She tells him cryptically that "they're coming" as he dismisses her, freezing her along with the other ancient ones.

*

The Hunter (Labyrinth 3 Other Prologue):
Willis returns to his base with the frozen Cassandra. He is told that a human spy breached the fortress and is asked to see him. Willis is furious when he discovers that the prisoner was placed in the room with the frozen figure of Daedalus and lashes out at his shades. He is meant to interrogate the prisoner but the butcher takes over momentarily and slaughters him instead.

He travels to his tower and climbs to the roof where he bombards Pandora's box with his magic. Eventually it will yield to his energy and open without the need for the key. His general, Bear, informs him that there was a problem in the wilderness with one of the shade squadrons. They never returned.

Willis teleports to investigate and discovers them all ripped to pieces by an unknown force. He hears something in the far distance and immediately knows the culprit, considering that it may become a problem.

*

Humanity begins life anew in a system of underground caverns.

*

Into Oblivion (Labyrinth 3 Other Prologue):
Humanity signs a peace treaty with Willis. General Mikhail Chuikov who is commanding the troops set to raid the fortress is furious and tries to go ahead with it anyway but he is overruled when the human military begin firing on the squad as they leave the underground caverns. Despondently, Mikhail is discharged and the peace treaty continues.

Humanity continue life anew in the caverns for 10 years without incident, but many people are becoming disillusioned with life down there. A businessman named Gabriel McCoy approaches Mikhail in a bar and asks him about possibly leading a team to raid Willis' fortress in an effort to bring it down.

Mikhail agrees because he has nothing worth living for anyway, and Gabriel tells him to meet at the ruins of Knossos Palace.

*

Labyrinth 3: Pandora's Calling (Ancient Greek Labyrinth):
The events of Labyrinth 3, for the Future portion of the Labyrinth, take place. A rag-tag group of misfits led by the mysterious Gabriel embark on a dangerous journey across a nuclear wasteland into the Labyrinth. They enter but are ambushed by Willis' army of Shades, led by General Bear.

They are saved at the last second when space-time is curved by the intense power that Pandora is unleashing into the world. The heroes from the Ancient Greek Labyrinth arrive and do battle, fighting the Shades. Eventually even they are outnumbered, until Roth arrives along with Kristoff and the Caduceus. The staff is the key to opening Pandora, and they must protect it. However it will also allow them to phase between the two Labyrinth eras in order to eventually awaken the frozen guardians so that they may defeat Willis once and for all.

At this point, a "time bubble" is created. The events inside the Labyrinth take place outside of the timeline, inside this "time bubble". After a long journey, the heroes face off against Willis who is on the verge of unleashing Pandora. The guardians arrive in time to defeat him, but Brie and Tyrese proceed to try and open Pandora's Box. Tyrese turns on Brie, realising that the past should not be changed and that Pandora is tricking them.

Brie is killed but the Butcher emerges, free now that Willis is no longer possessing him. He turns on Pandora and proceeds to given the final energy boost it needs to burst open. Urk appears to try and stop the process but it's too late, and he merely offers them a passage away. The butcher is swallowed whole by the energy of Pandora as the heroes make their escape. They meet up with Roth as the time bubble collapses and each return to their own time.

Before they leave, they witness Pandora's explosion, though are directed to not look too closely. A monstrous, red entity emerges from the energy. It resembles a bright red infant with inhuman features. As it turns, shrieking towards them, the heroes leave to return to their own times, and the time bubble collapses.

*

Two centuries later, a mining ship called the Dalia is commissioned to explore the surface of Ceres'. The crew were supposed to do a routine scout for extra-terrestrial life before the mining operations began, but they disappear mysteriously in unknown circumstances.

*

Labryinth 4, Prologue 1:
A man named Captain Walker arrives on the Dalia. His mission is to find out what happened to the missing crew. As he's exploring the wreckage, he notes an abundance of ammonia in the air which he presumes to be the cause. However he finds uniforms of crew members strewn around, with their bodies completely vanished as if into thin air.

He decides to abandon the mission, only to be hunted down by a sinister shrieking beast. Near where the beast catches him lies an open metal crate. On the side, an emblem depicts the same "eye" symbol that appeared on the door to the monastery around inferno.

*

Labryinth 4, Main Prologue:
Captain Watts, a colleague of Captain Walker awakens aboard the Europa station with a severe hangover from a party the night before. He is immediately summoned to debrief by Mission Control. Mission Control informs him of the disappearance of Captain Walker, and that he needs to put a crew together to go and investigate a signal that was picked up from the Dalia. The signal is the shrieking that Walker heard.

Captain Walker reaslises that it's a mission nobody will want to embark on, but he still has to find a crew. He witnesses an altercation with an officer and a civilian. The civilian is demanding he take a ship himself to find the Dalia, because some of his family were aboard the vessel and he wants answers as to their disappearance. Watts turns this to his favour, and informs the officer he can allow the civilians aboard his crew, even though this was not cleared by Mission Control.
